Galesburg, IL – The Prairie Fire defeated Millikin University in convincing fashion on Sunday at the Merdian Tennis Courts.
Knox, which has won three of its last four matches, beat the Big Blue 8-1. Millikin’s only win was 7-5, 0-6, 10-5 decision at #3 singles.
Junior Dana Pierce (South Barrington, IL, Barrington) won her #1 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Senior Emily Tyl (Downers Grove, IL, Benet Academy) moved up to #2 singles and won 6-1, 6-1. The Prairie Fire did not allow a set point in victories by junior Emiley Brand (Princeton, IL, Princeton), sophomore Claire Neri (Melrose Park, IL, West Leyden), and senior Charmaine Washington (Blue Island, IL, La Lumiere School) in #4 through #6 singles.
The doubles competition was also dominated by Knox. Pierce and junior Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, NE, Central) posted an 8-0 win in #1 doubles. Senior Aimee Neilan (Lake in the Hills, IL, Jacobs) and Washington also won 8-0 in #2 doubles while Brand and senior Sarah Bolitho (St. Charles, IL, St. Charles East) made it a sweep at #3 doubles.
The Prairie Fire has two regular season matches remaining before the 2012 Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Team, Doubles, and Singles Championships between October 12 and 14. The team championships will be held on October 12 in Rockford, Illinois and the doubles and singles championships follow the next two days in Madison, Wisconsin.
Knox plays Midwest Conference South Division matches at Illinois College on October 2 at 4:00 p.m. and at home (the fall season home finale) against Lake Forest College at 8:30 a.m. on October 6.
The Prairie Fire (4-7, 2-2 MWC South) defeated Illinois College (3-5, 0-5 MWC South) 9-0 on September 16. The Foresters (9-2, 3-0 MWC South) are currently in first place in the Midwest Conference South Division.
