Dubuque, IA – The University of Dubuque doubled up the Prairie Fire women's tennis team 6-3 in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon.

Seniors Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, NE, Central) and Dana Pierce (Barrington, IL, Barrington) accounted for all three Knox wins in the contest.  The match also provided valuable experience for first-year Celina Dietzel (Milwaukee, WI, Cudahy), who played #6 singles and #3 doubles for the Prairie Fire.

Garvin defeated her #1 singles opponent 6-2, 6-0 while Pierce won her #2 singles match 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.

Garvin and Pierce teamed up for a victory as well.  The Prairie Fire's #1 doubles team outlasted the Spartans' top duo 9-8.

"It was great to see Dana and Charlotte overcome the physical as well as the mental challenges of their matches," Knox head coach Miriam Skrade said.

"Even though my matches started off slowly, I was able to persevere and pull out a couple of wins," Pierce said.

Dietzel, while coming up short in the win column, played with confidence.  "Playing my first varsity matches was a great experience," she said.  "I played against some tough opponents, but it only made me more excited to get better and improve my technique."

The Spartans improved their record to 3-1 with the victory.  Knox (0-2) will try again for its first win of the season on September 7 at home against Beloit College at 9:00 a.m. and Ripon College at 3:00 p.m.
